there was a disturbance reported in Colorado, I believe last night.

someone complained of a horn blasting

police went to the scene to investigate

what they found was quite interesting

as they approached the car, with the horn blasting, and the car bouncing and shaking, they had expected to find teens inside but where surprised to see a bear in the car.

the bear somehow must have gotten the door open and climbed inside, the door then closed behind him (?her? - maybe by size it was a boar).  in his attempts to get back out the gear shift was knocked out of park and the car rolled down a hill, the flashers were on and the horn blasting.

as this was on the TV news the camera filmed the location of the car, a closer view of the bear inside, and (assuming the bear was tranqed and removed) the interior damage caused by his occupancy

now the owner may have a hard time telling the insurance company what happened to his car and be believed

thought this news story was worth sharing and add some humor here after some of the flack raised from earlier posts

That is so funny, Sewing.  I really can't imagine it  but then, we don't have bears here.

Bear breaks into car in Larkspur
Hendrik Sybrandy KDVR Denver
3:11 PM MDT, July 23, 2010

The Story family awoke to the sound of their car horn honking, only to discover this black bear trapped inside the vehicle. Larkspur, Colorado. (July 23, 2010)

LARKSPUR, Colo. - A Larkspur family is reliving its close encounter with a car thief Friday morning. But this wasn't just any car thief... it was an adult and very menacing black bear.

The bear managed to get into Ben Story's Toyota Corolla, put the car into neutral and send the vehicle skidding over one hundred feet into some trees on the family's property.

"The destruction is amazing," said Story. "He tore everything up and managed not to miss one little square inch of the car, he got it all."

A neighbor of the Storys first heard the car honking shortly after two a.m.. When Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies arrived, they spotted the bear inside the vehicle. The Story family of five was asleep inside their house and never heard any commotion.

Ralph Story said his 17-year-old son had left a peanut butter sandwich inside the vehicle and said the scent of the food undoubtedly prompted the bear to break in and enter.

"He was locked in the car and couldn't get out and the police didn't know what to do," he said.

The sheriff's deputies ultimately attached rope to one of the car doors, opened the door from a distance and let the bear scamper away.

Damage to the inside of the Toyota was extensive. Ralph Story said his insurance agent has told him the car will be a total loss.

Story said that bears are part of the scenery in the Larkspur area but he said a close encounter like this one has never happened to his family before.

"When you live out here you better expect those thing to happen."

this is the actual report from Larkspur, Colorado  (?Denver)

This is more common than one would think , but up our way we have had several cases of bears breaking into cabins and homes .  Our area is sparsly populated and we have as some had said more wild bear than humans !  But we have had many a home owner get a surprize when they returned home . those pesky bears are worse than wild kids !

Funny!

I haven't seen a bear in my area, other than the Zoo. I live so far away from them maybe that's why I haven't seen one.

This spring , I have had to shoo  bears out of the yard , they were after the bird feed ,  We tend to see them more in the spring when it's been real dry as no berries have matured yet and they are hungry. We have many streams they could go fishing in but apparently thats to much like work for them , so they come visit us and get the easy food .
We are also having a Wolf problem and they are comming into peoples yards and taking small animals off for din , din  ( Dinner ) !  People are losing there small dogs and not much can be done , The gov wants to keep the numbers down but there is a big fight right now with the Animals rights people who don't even live here !   They all live where there are no animals , except the human ones.   Anyhow the DNR and the Federal Gov have said it's time to control there numbers but there have been several lawsuits files to stop any kind of Wolf Population control.  Figures , the ones who don't want any control are the very ones who live in the cities and have most likely never seen a wild Wolf let along any wild animal.

We've had a rash of bear sitings in our area as well.  police have been called, biologist. bears have been tranqued and carted to other locations ... sometimes serveral counties away and yet there have been a few that have found their way back to the same locatilty they were trapped in.  one recently was reproted to have been tagged several times.  most of these sitings and trappings have been the yearlings (cubs from last year's litters)

local incident was where one was spotted running through the yards and had climbed a tree. the biologist/ game warden tranqued the bear up in the tree and instead of falling out of the tree like they had figured would happen the bear fell asleep in the tree so the ladder truck was brought in to get the bear out of the tree (police and firemen all at one point were on the scene) and then place in the 'barrel" used for transporting bears to other locations.

last year we had a bear that kept returning to the area ... even after several transportation (to locations farther away each time) he still found his way back

and yes big attractants are the simple things liek bird feeders, garbage cans, they are also the easy things so that the bear does not have to work for din-din  (like fishing or roaming for miles finding bushes with berries,  and yes too there are some food delicaices that are not available all year round - so they wander in search of anything to eat)
male bears (boars) have a wider search range than the females (sows), the males will roam in approximately a 300 mile diameter circle area where the sows only roam for about 100 miles (possibly because they are not as large but also they usually have cubs in tow)     and the areas they used to roam years ago were mostly wilderness areas and farms and now with man expanding into their lands there are more chances of contact as their ranges get smaller and smaller

believe it or not --->  DNA testing

there was a grizzly attack at a campsite in ?Yellowstone (hope I got the right park .... ?Montana?)
1 person was killed  and several were injured

they are collecting hair at the scene and dna from bite marks to compare it to a suspected mamma grizzly with 2 yearlings

if confirmed positive then all three wil lbe put down  (as the cubs were present and witnessed and then might turn and do likewise)

suspected sow I believe is being held in a bear 'cart' (barrel with sliding door on a trailer)

Cooke City, Montana
Soda Creek Campsite

three cubs were with the female bear

traps were set up, hoping the bear would return to the site,

now the officials are awaiting results of the DNA testing from the saliva found on the victims

border issue --> doubt it .... Montana is tooo close to Canada, the AZ issue is for Mexico

days before this incident Jack Hanna was out hiking with a group [was on national news the other day, no forgot location of incident] when Grizzlies attacked them (well, more started to approach)
quick thinking with pepper spray kept them away

there are two schools of thought for bear attacks
1.  yell & scream and make yourself look bigger
2.  play dead

in the Yellowstone incident one of the injured people tried the first method but when that did not work she tried tactic # 2 and the bear left
